Growing Energy Crisis: Challenges and opportunities

The strong correlation between rapid global population growth, environmental impacts from fossil fuels and depletion of the resources, growing energy needs and rising energy cost is no longer a regional problem but a global issue. Competition in energy resources is a major challenge to industrial productivity globally with power rationing and outages being a common occurrence today. A World Bank survey  of 2019 titled: Underutilised potential: The business costs of unreliable infrastructure in developing countries, carried out in 138 countries representing a global GDP of 32% revealed sales losses worth 81.6 billion 2018 real USD due to power outages. The International Labour Organisation’s International journal of energy economics and policy, 2016, Vol.6 (1), p.98 reveals that power rationing and outages are responsible for about 35% reduction in industrial production capacity in developing economies and up to 50% in Africa South of the Sahara. Finding solutions to these dynamic challenges for governments and businesses in these regions creates development and business opportunities to the stakeholders.
